Award winning idea

Gagarin, Batteriid Architects and Landslag formed a design group which shared the first prize in a design competition for the tourist attraction Þríhnjúkagígur on the Reykjanes peninsula.  Þríhnúkagígur is an old volcano with a huge empty magma chamber where plans are to allow visitors to travel into the earth and experience the volcano from within.

The design group illustrated interpretive plans and ideas for the whole area around the mountain including ways to carry travelers into the crater.  Various travelling routes for different target groups where designed where highly interactive media solutions will play a key role.  The aim of the design was of course to make such a trip an unforgettable event.

Other awarded ideas came from Design Group Italia in cooperation with Basalt architects, and from Anna María & Guðlaug design team.
